Hully is a free video streaming platform designed specifically for high school and college students. Our goal was to create an interface that balances relaxation and entertainment with tools to promote mindfulness, productivity, and focused study habits.
Applying a full design-thinking process—empathy, research, ideation, prototyping, and refinement—we explored how a new streaming service could stand out from existing platforms. We conducted market research on Netflix, Hulu, and HBO Max, analyzing features students enjoy, such as content categories, previews, “More Like This” recommendations, and layout preferences. Observing the user flows of these platforms allowed us to identify opportunities for improvement, including binge-control tools, audio-only content, and educational content integration.
We designed the app with a student persona in mind, continually asking: “How will this help Jade?” Features include a timer to control binge-watching, intuitive navigation, and a balance between familiar streaming mechanics and new productivity-focused tools. Our iterative process emphasized frequent flow checks, peer feedback, and leveraging successful design patterns to ensure the interface is both engaging and purposeful.
